This tower, known locally as The Temple, sits high on a hill above Saline, in West Fife, and commands superb views across the Firth of Forth to West Lothian.

David Black, who owned the Bandrum estate, erected a wooden look-out tower here at some point between 1805 and 1813, to commemorate the Battle of Trafalgar.

This stone replacement was commissioned by the estate's next owner, former sea captain Archibald Hogg, of the East India Company, as an observatory. It was designed by local masons Henry Laurance and Lewis Mercer. The foundation stone was laid on July 7 1845.

It was generally used by Archibald as a summerhouse, but he enjoyed teasing his wife that it was somewhere for him to go after they quarrelled.
